About AutoTaxCalculator
We build free calculators that tell car buyers what they'll really pay in tax, title and registration, and show exactly how we got there.
Why this site exists
Buying a car is one of the biggest purchases most people make, yet the government charges on it are hard to work out in advance. A dealer's buyer's order lists "tax, title and license" as one line. State websites explain the rules in legal language spread across several pages. Most online calculators apply one flat rate and miss the rules that actually change the number, like Arkansas's used-car brackets, Tennessee's $1,600 local cap or South Carolina's $500 maximum.
We started AutoTaxCalculator to fix that: one page per state, a calculator that follows that state's real rules, plain-English explanations, and a link to the official source for every rate.
What makes our calculators different
- State-specific rules, not one flat rate. Each calculator is written for one state's law.
- The math is always shown. Under every total you'll see each step with your numbers, so you can check it or show it to a dealer.
- Official sources only. Rates come from state revenue departments, DMVs, county clerks and published state rules, listed at the bottom of every page.
- Dated and maintained. Every calculator shows the date its rules were last checked. Read more in How we calculate.
- Free and private. No sign-up. Your numbers stay in your browser.
Who writes our content
Our pages are researched and written by the AutoTaxCalculator editorial team. Before a calculator goes live, we test it against the state's own published examples and calculators, and we reread the official rules each time we update it. Our standards for accuracy, sourcing and corrections are set out in our editorial policy.
Independence
AutoTaxCalculator is an independent website. We are not a government agency and we're not affiliated with any DMV, department of revenue, dealer or lender. Our calculators give estimates for planning; the amount you owe is always set by the state office that titles and registers your vehicle. Nothing on this site is tax, legal or financial advice.
To keep the calculators free, we may show advertising or link to partner services in the future. If we do, it will never change a calculation, and advertising will always be clearly separated from our content.
