How much is car registration in California?

Car registration in California costs $76 + $34 CHP fee + 0.65% of your car's value + a $33–$231 transportation improvement fee, plus county fees. For a new $35,000 car that's about $536 a year. For an older car worth under $5,000, it can be under $200.

So how much is car registration? California drivers pay a small fixed part, $110 for the registration and CHP fees together, and everything else rises with the car's value. That's why the same DMV renewal can cost a Tesla owner three times what a Corolla owner pays, and why your own bill gets cheaper each year for the first decade. How much is vehicle registration in California for your car? It comes down to three things: what the car cost when you got it, how many years you've owned it, and whether you pay on time.

Use the calculator above for your exact car. You can use it as a CA car registration fee calculator for a renewal, a California car registration calculator for a car you just bought, or a DMV VLF calculator when you need the deductible part for your taxes. The sections below explain each fee, so you can check the math against your DMV notice.

How much to register a car in California, by car price

Here's what the core fees add up to at five price points: registration, CHP, VLF and TIF, before county fees and the $20 smog abatement fee. The "5th year" column uses the DMV's VLF schedule, where the value drops to 60% of the original price.

California car registration cost by vehicle price, first and fifth year, 2026
    Price you paid1st year5th year
    $15,000$273.50$234.50
    $25,000$404.50$273.50
    $35,000$535.50$312.50
    $50,000$633.00$437.00
    $70,000$796.00$581.00

The cost to register a car in California jumps at the TIF boundaries. A car valued at $24,999 pays a $66 TIF, and one at $25,000 pays $132. Past the 11th year the car registration price in California levels off, because the VLF value stops falling at 15% of the original price. A $35,000 car then costs about $210 a year. When people compare the California vehicle registration cost with other states, this value-based structure is the reason it looks high for new cars and reasonable for old ones.

California vehicle registration fees in 2026

Every California vehicle registration fee on your notice falls into one of these categories. The DMV bases them on the vehicle type, its purchase price or declared value, the purchase date or the date it entered California, where you live, and, for trucks, weight.

California car registration fees also include a few one-off charges you'll only see in specific situations. The DMV's schedule lists $28 for a replacement title, plate, registration card or sticker, $28 for a nonresident service fee when an out-of-state vehicle is first registered, and $28 to file a planned nonoperation (PNO) for a car you won't drive. Motorcycles add a $2 motorcycle safety fee. These CA registration fees aren't in the calculator because most owners never pay them.

California vehicle license fee (VLF), explained

The California vehicle license fee is the biggest part of most registration bills, and the part people find most confusing. You'll also see it written as the vehicle licence fee, and older notices called it the California auto license fee. It's the same charge: 0.65% of the vehicle's value, paid in place of a yearly property tax on the car. The value starts at the purchase price or value when you acquired the car, then drops each year for the first 11 renewal years. If the car is sold, the new owner's price becomes the new starting value.

The calculator uses the standard depreciation schedule for the vehicle license fee (VLF): 100% of the value in the first year, then 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 25%, 20%, and 15% from the eleventh year on.

California VLF by year for a $35,000 car
    Registration yearValue usedVLF
    Year 1$35,000$227.50
    Year 3$28,000$182.00
    Year 5$21,000$136.50
    Year 8$10,500$68.25
    Year 11+$5,250$34.13

The VLF is the only part of the bill you can deduct on your federal income tax return, if you itemize, because it's a tax based on value. The DMV has its own tool to show the VLF you paid for tax purposes, and our results line shows it too. That's what people searching for a DMV VLF calculator usually need at tax time.

Cost to register a car in California after you buy it

When you buy from a California dealer, the dealer handles the paperwork and includes the registration fees, plus sales tax, in your contract. Zero-emission vehicles skip the $121 road improvement fee on that first registration. When you buy from a private seller, you transfer the title at the DMV yourself, and you'll pay the transfer fee and use tax on the price. The VLF also restarts at the price you paid, which is why a car can cost more to register after it changes hands. For the sales or use tax side of a purchase, our California car sales tax calculator works as a tax, title and license calculator for California when you combine it with this page.

How much is a title transfer in California?

The title transfer fee in California is $15, with a $15 penalty if the transfer is late. Most buyers pay more than $15 in total, though, because a transfer usually comes with use tax on the price and, if the registration year is ending, the renewal fees. A title-only application costs $28, and a replacement title is $28.

    Moving to California

If you're moving to California, there's a $28 nonresident service fee on the first registration, and the VLF is set from the car's purchase price or current value. If you wait too long after becoming a resident, the penalties for vehicles never registered in California apply: 40% of the VLF if you're up to one year late, 80% for one to two years, and 160% after that.

    California car registration renewal fee

A California registration renewal costs the same set of fees every year, with a smaller VLF and possibly a lower TIF tier as the car loses value. Your vehicle registration renewal cost in California for a $35,000 car falls from $535.50 in year one to $312.50 in year five and about $210 from year 11. The DMV mails a billing notice about 60 days before the registration expires. It shows the exact vehicle registration renewal CA fee, including county fees and whether a smog check is due. Vehicles in their first eight model years pay the $20 smog abatement fee instead of getting a smog check.

Your plates show only the month and year, but the registration expires on a specific day, printed on the registration card. If no notice arrives, the DMV's online fee calculator will tell you how much vehicle registration renewal in California will cost for your car.

CA DMV late registration fee calculator

Select how late you are in the calculator above and it adds the penalty for you. The DMV gives no grace period: a renewal paid one day after the expiration date is late. Our late fees by state guide compares California with other states. California late registration fees are a percentage of your VLF (and weight fee, for trucks) plus two flat late fees, and they grow quickly.

A planned nonoperation (PNO) can still be filed up to 90 days after the expiration date if the car truly wasn't driven, but the late penalties are still due.

    Worked examples

    New $35,000 car, first registration

    1. Registration $76 + CHP $34 = $110
    2. VLF: $35,000 × 0.65% = $227.50
    3. TIF for a $35,000 value: $198
    4. Total: $535.50 + county fees (+ $20 smog abatement if it applies)

Same car at its 5th renewal, paid 45 days late

    1. Value: $35,000 × 60% = $21,000 → VLF $136.50, TIF $66
    2. Regular fees: $76 + $34 + $136.50 + $66 = $312.50
    3. Late penalty (31 days–1 year): 60% of VLF $81.90 + $30 + $30 = $141.90
    4. Total: $454.40. Paying late cost 45% more.

Used $18,000 car bought from a private seller

    1. Transfer fee: $15
    2. VLF restarts at the price: $18,000 × 0.65% = $117.00, TIF $66
    3. When the registration renews: $76 + $34 + $117 + $66 = $293.00 + county fees

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate car registration fees in California?

Add $76 + $34, then 0.65% of the car's value for the VLF (the price you paid, reduced by the DMV schedule for each year you've owned it), then the TIF for that value. To calculate the vehicle registration fee in California for a renewal, start from your purchase price and the number of years owned, or just use the calculator above. It's a quick way to estimate car registration in CA before the notice arrives, and it gives the same cost to register a vehicle in California that the DMV would show, apart from county fees.

How much is it to register a car in California for the first time?

For a new car from a California dealer: $76 registration + $34 CHP + 0.65% of the price + the TIF for its value, plus county fees and usually the $20 smog abatement fee. A $35,000 car comes to about $536, and the dealer collects it with your purchase.

How much is car registration in CA for an older car?

Much less. From the 11th year the VLF uses 15% of the original price, so a car bought for $15,000 pays about $158 a year in core fees: $76 + $34 + $14.63 VLF + $33 TIF.

How much for car registration in California after moving from another state?

The normal fees plus a $28 nonresident service fee on the first registration. Register promptly, because the never-registered-in-California penalties start at 40% of the VLF.

How much are car tags in California?

"Tags" means the yearly registration. Your sticker comes with the renewal and costs nothing extra. A replacement plate or sticker is $28.

How much is a title transfer fee in California?

$15, or $30 with the late penalty. Use tax on a private purchase and any renewal fees due are separate.

How much is motorcycle registration in California?

Motorcycles pay the same kinds of fees as cars: registration, CHP, VLF on the bike's value and the TIF, plus a $2 motorcycle safety fee. A newer, more expensive motorcycle pays more. Use the calculator with the bike's purchase price for an estimate.

Why is my California registration so expensive?

Mostly because of the VLF and TIF, which are based on value. A newer or more expensive car pays more. The cost drops each year as the VLF value depreciates.

Is there a grace period for California registration?

No. Penalties start the day after your registration expires.

Are California registration fees tax deductible?

Only the vehicle license fee part, and only if you itemize deductions on your federal return. The flat fees aren't deductible. Our guide are vehicle registration fees tax deductible? covers every state.
