How Colorado car registration fees are calculated
Colorado registration ≈ specific ownership tax (a share of 85% of MSRP) + road and bridge safety surcharges + age-of-vehicle fee + about $11–$12 of small fees. A new $40,000 car in the Denver area pays about $776 in its first year, before the small weight-based base fee.
Registration in Colorado is annual and runs for 12 months starting the month after you apply. You pay at your county motor vehicle office, and the bill combines state taxes, statewide FASTER surcharges and county fees.
Specific ownership tax (SOT)
SOT works like a property tax on your vehicle and is paid instead of personal property tax. It's based on the vehicle's original taxable value, 85% of its MSRP when new, and its year of service. That value never changes, even when the car is resold.
| Year of service | SOT rate | SOT on a $40,000 MSRP |
|---|---|---|
| 1st year | 2.1% | $714.00 |
| 2nd year | 1.5% | $510.00 |
| 3rd year | 1.2% | $408.00 |
| 4th year | 0.9% | $306.00 |
| 5th–9th years | 0.45% | $153.00 |
| 10th year and later | flat | $3.00 |
Road and bridge safety surcharges (FASTER)
| Vehicle weight | Road safety (until Aug 31, 2027) | Road safety (from Sep 1, 2027) | Bridge safety |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 lbs or less | $12.30 | $16.00 | $13.00 |
| 2,001–5,000 lbs | $19.30 | $23.00 | $18.00 |
| 5,001–10,000 lbs | $24.30 | $28.00 | $23.00 |

Worked examples
New $40,000 SUV (4,000 lbs) in the Denver emissions area
- SOT: $40,000 × 85% × 2.1% = $714.00
- Road safety $19.30 + bridge safety $18.00 + age fee $12.00
- Small fees: $4 + $1.50 + $0.70 + $0.50 + $1.50 + $2 + $1 + $0.10 + $0.50 + $0.59 = $12.39
- Total: $775.69 plus the base fee
The same SUV in its fifth year
- SOT: $34,000 × 0.45% = $153.00
- Plus the same $49.30 in surcharges and age fee and $12.39 in small fees
- Total: $214.69 plus the base fee
A 12-year-old car
- SOT is a flat $3.00 and the age fee drops to $7
- $3 + $19.30 + $18 + $7 + $12.39 = $59.69 plus the base fee
Deadlines, late fees and credits
Register within 60 days of buying a vehicle, even one bought from an out-of-state dealer. New residents have 90 days. Renewals are due by the end of the grace month, the month after expiration. Late fees are $25 per month, or part of a month, up to $100. Since January 1, 2023, an expired temporary tag no longer protects you from late fees.
If you sell a car before its registration runs out, Colorado gives a prorated credit for the remaining fees and surcharges toward your next vehicle. You must transfer it in person at your county motor vehicle office, not online.
Frequently asked questions
Is specific ownership tax deductible?
SOT is value-based and charged instead of personal property tax, which is why the DMV lists it separately on the back of the registration card. Ask a tax professional whether you can deduct it on your return. Our guide are vehicle registration fees tax deductible? covers every state.
What does the Keep Colorado Wild pass add?
It's an optional $29 state parks pass you can add when you register. It's valid until your registration expires and isn't included in this calculator.
Is there a new wildlife fee?
From January 1, 2027, you can choose to give $5 to the Wildlife Collision Prevention Program when registering online or in person. It's voluntary and not a registration fee.
