Nevada Car Registration Fee Calculator

Most of a Nevada registration bill is the Governmental Services Tax, a yearly tax on your car's original sticker price that shrinks as the car ages. This calculator works it out from the MSRP and adds sales tax if you're buying from a dealer.

How Nevada registration fees are calculated

Nevada registration = $33 + Governmental Services Tax (4% of 35% of MSRP, depreciated) + supplemental GST in Clark and Churchill. A new car with a $30,000 MSRP pays $558 in Las Vegas and $453 in Reno.

    The DMV follows four steps:

    1. Start with the original MSRP. It stays the same for the life of the vehicle.
    2. Take 35% of it. That's the DMV valuation.
    3. Depreciate it by 5% after the first year, then by 10% each year after, down to a floor of 15%.
    4. Charge 4% of the result as Governmental Services Tax, with a $16 minimum. In Clark and Churchill counties, add 1% of the same value as supplemental GST.

The $33 registration fee funds road construction and the DMV. The GST goes to local governments, school districts and the state General Fund. The supplemental GST is a voter-approved highway tax.

Totals include the $33 registration fee and are rounded to the dollar, as in the DMV's own example. Because the tax uses the original MSRP, an expensive car stays expensive to register even after it's been resold several times.

Sales tax on cars in Nevada

Nevada dealers collect sales tax on the actual purchase price, at the rate for your county. As of the Department of Taxation's 2026 rate table, county rates run from 6.850% in Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt and Mineral to 8.375% in Clark. Washoe is 8.265%, and Carson City is 7.600%. Out-of-state dealers may or may not collect Nevada tax. Many send it to the DMV with the title paperwork.

Private party sales, family sales and gifts aren't subject to sales tax in Nevada. Buying from a neighbor means you pay only the title, registration and GST.

    Worked examples

The DMV's example: $20,000 MSRP, two years old, Clark County

    1. DMV valuation: $20,000 × 35% = $7,000
    2. Depreciated 15%: $5,950
    3. GST: $5,950 × 4% = $238; supplemental GST: $5,950 × 1% = $60
    4. With the $33 registration fee: $331

New $45,000 SUV bought for $43,000 from a Reno dealer

    1. GST: $45,000 × 35% × 4% = $630; no supplemental GST in Washoe
    2. Registration: $630 + $33 = $663
    3. Sales tax: $43,000 × 8.265% = $3,553.95
    4. First Nevada title: $28.25
    5. Total: $4,245.20

    GST exemptions

County assessors can approve Governmental Services Tax relief for veterans with qualifying dates of service, disabled veterans and their surviving spouses, and people who are blind. Active-duty military members who are residents of another state but stationed in Nevada are fully exempt, and the exemption can transfer to a spouse. Native American tribal members living on tribal lands are exempt with Form VP 154. Exemptions must be claimed when you register or renew. They aren't credited or refunded afterward.

    Late registration

Nevada has no grace period. Registration expires on the date shown, not at the end of the month. If you renew late you pay the full year ahead, prorated fees and taxes for the time the car was unregistered, a $6 per month penalty on the past-due registration fee, and a 10% penalty on past-due GST and supplemental GST ($6 minimum, calculated every 15 days).

    Frequently asked questions

Why does my used car's Nevada registration cost so much?

Because the Governmental Services Tax uses the original MSRP, not what you paid. A $60,000 car bought used for $20,000 is still taxed on 35% of $60,000, depreciated for its age.

    What's the minimum Nevada registration?

With the $16 GST minimum and the $33 registration fee, $49 outside Clark and Churchill counties. In those two counties the supplemental GST adds at least a few dollars more.

How much is a Nevada title?

    A first-time Nevada title costs $28.25.
