Is there sales tax on cars in New Hampshire?

No. New Hampshire has no sales tax on cars, new or used, from a dealer or a private seller. Instead, NH residents pay a town or city permit fee each year they register the vehicle, plus state registration fees.

That's why New Hampshire sales tax on vehicles, and New Hampshire auto sales tax searches in general, have a short answer but car ownership still has a real cost here. A new $35,000 SUV owes no tax at purchase, but its first-year town permit fee is $630. The fee falls every year, reaching $105 once the vehicle is five or more years old.

How the town permit fee is calculated

The municipal permit fee uses the vehicle's MSRP (the manufacturer's list price when new) and its model year:

New Hampshire municipal permit fee rates
Model yearRate per $1,000 of MSRPOn a $35,000 MSRP
    Current model year$18$630
    1 year old$15$525
    2 years old$12$420
    3 years old$9$315
    4 years old$6$210
    5 years old and older$3$105

For a registration shorter than 12 months, the fee is prorated: rate × MSRP ÷ 12 × the number of months ÷ 1,000. That's common when you first register a car, because registrations are lined up with your birth month.

    Example: a 2-year-old car with a $28,000 MSRP, registered for 7 months

    1. Rate for a 2-year-old vehicle: $12 per $1,000
    2. $12 × $28,000 ÷ 1,000 = $336 for a full year
    3. Prorated: $336 × 7 ÷ 12 = $196.00

    State registration fees

On top of the town permit fee, you pay State of New Hampshire fees, which depend on the vehicle's type, fuel type, gross weight and plate type. NH DMV raised these state fees for registrations and titles effective January 1, 2026. Your town clerk, who usually acts as a municipal agent for the DMV, collects both. A $3 municipal agent fee applies to registrations completed on the DMV's behalf, and some towns charge a small title application fee.

Buying a car in New Hampshire

    • NH residents: no sales tax. You register with your town or city first (paying the permit fee), then complete the state portion, often at the same counter.
    • Residents of other states: New Hampshire won't charge you tax, but your home state will when you register the car there. Massachusetts, for example, collects its 6.25% sales tax at registration.
    • Moving to New Hampshire: you'll register with your new town, paying the permit fee based on your vehicle's MSRP and age, and there's no sales tax to pay on a car you bring with you.
