How much is car registration in NC?
The NC registration fee for a standard plate is $46.25 a year ($53.75 in Durham, Orange and Wake counties, $47.75 in Randolph). On the same bill you pay your car's yearly property tax, which is usually the bigger number.
That's why two people asking "how much is vehicle registration in NC?" can get very different answers. The plate fee is almost the same everywhere. The property tax depends on what your car is worth and on the tax rates where you live. A new SUV in a city with its own tax rate can owe several hundred dollars a year. An older car in a rural county may owe less than the plate fee. So the NC auto registration cost is really two numbers: a nearly flat plate fee and a value-based tax. Below, we break the North Carolina vehicle registration cost down piece by piece, so you can check the NC car registration cost on your renewal notice and see why the price of car registration in NC changes from year to year.
Trucks with a weighted tag are priced by declared weight instead. This calculator covers standard passenger plates, so it isn't an NC weighted tag cost calculator. For a weighted tag, use the NCDMV fee schedule for your weight class.
North Carolina registration and title fees (NC tag fees)
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard plate (most counties) | $46.25 |
| Standard plate (Durham, Orange, Wake) | $53.75 |
| Standard plate (Randolph) | $47.75 |
| Certificate of title | $66.75 |
| Plate transfer to another vehicle | $25.50 |
| Registration name change | $25.50 |
| Card processing (in office / online / kiosk) | 1.22% / 1.85% + $3 / 2% |
Durham, Orange, Randolph and Wake counties charge a regional registration tax for public transit, which is why their plate fees are higher. Trucks above certain weights pay weight-based ("weighted") tag fees instead of the standard plate fee. Your renewal notice lists the exact amount for your vehicle class.
How the vehicle property tax is calculated
North Carolina counties are required to tax motor vehicles as property. Since the Tag & Tax Together program began, NCDMV bills that tax with your registration renewal, so you pay both in one payment. The formula:
- Your county assigns the vehicle a value for the year.
- The value is multiplied by your county tax rate, plus your city or fire district rate if you live in one.
- Rates are quoted per $100 of value, so divide by 100.
Example: a car valued at $18,000, combined rate of $1.00 per $100
- Property tax: $18,000 × 1.00 ÷ 100 = $180.00
- Plate fee in Wake County: $53.75
- Renewal total: $233.75
Your county's current tax rates are published on its tax office website, and NCDMV offers an online vehicle property tax estimator. Questions about the value your county assigned, or appeals, go to the county tax assessor, not NCDMV.
Registering a car you just bought
When you title and register a newly bought car, you pay the $66.75 title fee, the plate fee and the 3% highway use tax (see our NC car sales tax calculator). You can choose to defer that year's property tax for 60 days. NCDMV issues a limited registration plate, and the property tax must be paid before it expires. There's no grace period. New residents can use the same 60-day deferral.
Renewing your registration
Before you can renew, your vehicle must pass the required state inspection, no more than 90 days before the registration expires. You can then renew online, at a self-service kiosk, at a license plate agency or by mail. Since October 1, NCDMV no longer mails a physical sticker or printed registration card. You can print your registration from the NCDMV website for free.
Late renewal
If you renew late, NCDMV charges interest on both the property tax and the registration fee: 5% for the rest of the month after your registration expired, then 0.75% for every month after that until you pay. A late fee is also added to the registration renewal starting on the first day of the month after it expired.
NC title transfer fee
The cost to transfer a title in NC is the $66.75 certificate of title fee. When the title transfers on a sale, the 3% highway use tax is also due unless an exemption applies (gifts between spouses or parents and children, for example). The back of the title must be filled in by both parties, and an NC title must be notarized. License plate agencies charge $9 for one notarized signature.
