RI Auto Registration Fees and Car Sales Tax Calculator

Registering a car in Rhode Island means three charges at the DMV in Cranston: 7% sales tax, a $53.50 title, and a two-year registration priced by weight. January 2026 raised the DOT surcharge and added a yearly fee for hybrids and electric cars, and this calculator includes both.

How much to register a car in RI

Two-year registration = (annual weight fee × 2) + $3.50 technology surcharge + $40 DOT surcharge + any EV or hybrid fee. A gas car under 4,000 pounds renews for $103.50.

Rhode Island prices registration by the vehicle's weight, not its value or age, and the same fee applies whether the car is a 2009 sedan or this year's model. Most passenger registrations run two years. Annual registrations exist too, and their DOT surcharge is $20 per year.

    Up to 4,000 lbs$30.00$103.50
    4,001 – 5,000 lbs$40.00$123.50
    5,001 – 6,000 lbs$48.00$139.50
    6,001 – 7,000 lbs$56.00$155.50
    7,001 – 8,000 lbs$64.00$171.50
    8,001 – 9,000 lbs$70.00$187.50
    9,001 – 10,000 lbs$78.00$203.50

Commercial plates in the lightest class pay $34 a year instead of $30, and they renew every year. Heavier classes run up to $1,284 a year for 100,000 pounds, but those are trucks, not cars.

What changed for RI auto registration fees in 2026

Under R.I. Gen. Laws § 39-18.1-4, the DOT surcharge on a two-year passenger registration rose from $30 to $40 on January 1, 2026. One-year registrations went from $15 to $20. The 2026 state budget also amended § 31-6-1 to add a yearly fee for electrified vehicles, charged on top of the weight fee and surcharge:

    • Battery electric: $200 per year, so $400 on a two-year registration
    • Plug-in hybrid: $100 per year
    • Hybrid, including mild hybrids: $50 per year

The mild-hybrid rule catches drivers by surprise. A car with a small electric motor that only assists the engine counts as a hybrid, even though it can't run on electricity alone and never plugs in. The DMV applies the fee automatically from the vehicle's records, so check your renewal notice if you're unsure how your car is classified.

Rhode Island car sales tax: 7%

Rhode Island taxes vehicle purchases at 7%, the same rate as its general sales and use tax. A dealer sale is taxed as a sale, and a private sale as a use tax, but the rate is the same. What changes is the amount the 7% is applied to, and that depends on who sold you the vehicle.

    Buying from a dealer

On a new or used car, the tax is 7% of the purchase price minus your trade-in and other allowances. The trade-in deduction applies only to passenger vehicles, motorcycles and motor homes. A pickup or other truck traded in doesn't reduce the tax. Sales tax also applies to documentation fees, title preparation fees and similar dealer charges, so they belong in the price you enter.

    Buying from a private seller

A private sale is taxed as a "casual sale" under the use tax, and there's no trade-in credit. What the 7% applies to depends on the car's age:

    • 7 years old or less: the NADA Clean Retail book value or the sale price, whichever is greater
    • 8 to 29 years old: the sale price, as long as the car isn't on the Cars of Particular Interest (CPI) list
    • 30 years or older, or on the CPI list: the book value (NADA Clean Retail or CPI) or the purchase price, whichever is greater

If you think the book value is wrong, you have 30 days after paying to ask the Tax Administrator to redetermine it.

    Title fee and lien

A new Rhode Island title or a title transfer is $53.50, and so is a duplicate or salvage title. Recording a loan (the security lien statement) is a separate $53.50 transaction on the DMV's fee list. Every DMV fee already includes the $3.50 technology surcharge. Paying by card adds a service fee of at least $1.55, or 2.40% on $65 and over, which goes to the payment processor.

    Worked examples

    $34,000 SUV from a dealer, $8,000 trade-in, 3,900 lbs, gas

    1. Taxable amount: $34,000 − $8,000 = $26,000
    2. Sales tax: $26,000 × 7% = $1,820.00
    3. Title: $53.50
    4. Registration: $30 × 2 + $3.50 + $40 = $103.50
    5. Total at the DMV: $1,977.00 before any proration of the first registration

Five-year-old sedan bought privately for $14,000, NADA clean retail $16,500

    1. The car is under 8 years old, so the higher figure is taxed: $16,500
    2. Sales tax: $16,500 × 7% = $1,155.00
    3. Title $53.50 + two-year registration $103.50
    4. Total: $1,312.00

    Renewing a 4,700-lb electric crossover

    1. Weight fee: $40 × 2 = $80
    2. Surcharges: $3.50 + $40 = $43.50
    3. EV fee: $200 × 2 = $400
    4. Renewal: $523.50. The same car as a gas model would renew for $123.50.

    When the tax is due

Rhode Island auto sales tax is due by the 20th of the month after the purchase, even if the car isn't registered yet. If your bill of sale is dated July 26, the tax is due August 20, and interest and penalties start after that. You normally pay at the DMV when you register or title the vehicle. If you can't get there in time, the Division of Taxation's excise tax section (401-574-8955) can take the payment directly.

    Gifted vehicles

A gift isn't taxed unless taxes are still owed on the vehicle. For immediate family (parent, step-parent, sibling, step-sibling, spouse, child or step-child), a signed letter of gift is enough. For anyone else, you need a signed and notarized letter of gift plus the Affidavit of Gift of Motor Vehicle, form SU 87-65.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I trade in my pickup to lower the tax on a new car?

No. Rhode Island limits the trade-in deduction to passenger vehicles, motorcycles and motor homes. A truck or other vehicle you hand over still has value in the deal, but the 7% is charged on the full price of the car you're buying.

Why is my first registration less than the renewal price?

New passenger registrations are prorated by date, so the first registration may be for a shorter period than two years. Renewals are charged for the full two years.

How much does a vanity plate add?

A new vanity plate (Ocean design, passenger) is $69.50. After that, a vanity registration renews for the normal weight-based amount plus $120 every two years.

What does a duplicate registration cost?

    $20.50. A temporary registration is $13.50, and updating a registration is $8.50.
