How much is Richland County vehicle tax?

Richland County vehicle tax is the car's value × 6% × your area's millage ÷ 1,000. With 2025 millage between about 459 and 634 mills, a car valued at $20,000 owes roughly $551 to $761 a year, depending on where it's garaged.

Richland County auto tax is built in layers. Everyone in the county pays the same county levy (102.7 mills in 2025). The differences come from the school district you live in and, if you live inside a town, the municipal levy. That's why Richland County car taxes in Columbia's Richland Two area are the highest in the county, while parts of Richland One outside the city limits are among the lowest.

How Richland County car taxes are calculated

    1. Value: the Richland County Auditor assigns the vehicle a value for the tax year, using the state's vehicle value guide. Values fall as the car ages.
    2. Assessment: South Carolina assesses personal vehicles at 6% of that value.
    3. Millage: the assessed value is multiplied by your district's total levy and divided by 1,000.
    4. Credits and fees: some districts receive a local option sales tax (LOST) credit that reduces the bill slightly. County fees, such as the road maintenance fee, are added on top.

Example: a $20,000 car in the City of Columbia, Richland One

    1. Assessed value: $20,000 × 6% = $1,200
    2. Tax: $1,200 × 530.4 ÷ 1,000 = $636.48
    3. The same car in Columbia's Richland Two area: $1,200 × 634.2 ÷ 1,000 = $761.04

    Richland County vehicle tax payment

The Richland County Treasurer mails a vehicle tax notice before your registration is due for renewal. You can pay it online, by mail or in person at the treasurer's office. South Carolina vehicle property tax is due by the end of the month in which your registration expires, and SCDMV won't renew the registration until the county shows it as paid. Card payments online usually carry a processing fee.

Just bought a car? When you first register a newly purchased vehicle, you'll pay the one-time infrastructure maintenance fee (5%, maximum $500) at the dealer or SCDMV. The county vehicle tax follows on your first notice. See the South Carolina vehicle tax calculator for the purchase side.

    Road maintenance fee

Richland County also bills a road maintenance fee per vehicle with the tax notice to fund local road repairs. County records show it at $20 per vehicle for fiscal years 2012 through 2022. Check your notice for the current amount, because it's billed separately from the millage-based tax.

Ways to lower your Richland County car tax

    • High mileage appeal: the Richland County Auditor accepts an application for a high-mileage adjustment if your vehicle has well above-average miles for its age. Apply before you pay.
    • Moved or sold the car: if you sold the vehicle or moved out of the county, tell the auditor. You may be billed only for the months you owned it in the county, or receive a refund.
    • Exemptions: certain disabled veterans, former prisoners of war and others qualify for vehicle tax exemptions in South Carolina. These are approved through the county and SCDOR.
    • Check your district code: if your notice puts the car inside a city or district you don't live in, contact the auditor. The wrong code can cost you over 100 mills.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate my Richland County car taxes?

Multiply the car's value by 6%, then by your total millage, and divide by 1,000. The calculator above does this with the 2025 millage for your area. The Richland County Auditor's personal vehicle tax estimator gives an official estimate.

When are Richland County vehicle taxes due?

By the end of the month your registration expires. You need to pay before renewing your registration with SCDMV.

Why did my Richland County car tax go down this year?

Vehicle values drop every year as the car ages, and the 6% assessment applies to the lower value, so most bills shrink over time unless millage rises.

Do I pay Richland County vehicle tax on a leased car?

The leasing company is the owner, so it receives the tax bill and usually passes the cost to you in your lease payments or as a separate charge.

Who do I contact about my Richland County vehicle value?

The Richland County Auditor's office handles values, millage and high-mileage applications. The Treasurer's office handles payments.
