How Alaska registration is figured
Alaska registration = $100 state fee for two years + your area's MVRT for the vehicle's model year. A 2025 SUV in Anchorage costs $240 (MVRT $140). In Fairbanks, which isn't on the tax chart, it's $100.
The DMV charges two different things, and they work differently:
- Registration fee: a standard state fee by vehicle type. For a non-commercial passenger car, motor home, pickup, cargo van or all-purpose vehicle, it's $100 for a biennial registration (13 to 24 months). It's prorated by the number of months registered.
- Motor vehicle registration tax (MVRT): set by the municipality or borough of residence and collected by the DMV. It's based on vehicle type and age, and isn't prorated for non-commercial vehicles. It's charged only when a registration is issued or renewed, not again when the car changes owners mid-registration.

2026 and 2027 models pay the same. If your residence isn't in a taxable location, no MVRT is charged. The DMV notes there are exceptions for vehicles just outside a taxable boundary, or in areas that share a ZIP code with one, so ask the DMV if you're near a line. On Kodiak, non-commercial motor homes and amateur radio vehicles have their own rows on the chart.
How the DMV counts a car's age
The chart goes by model year. The DMV treats a vehicle as 1 year old during its model year, and a year older each January 1. The lowest tax bracket starts at 8 years old. One wrinkle: a registration expired less than 12 months picks up from the expiration date, and its MVRT uses the tax year and age at expiration. That can mean using the previous year's chart.
Other DMV fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Title issuance | $15 |
| Lien recording on a title | $15 |
| Renewing in person at a DMV office | $10 |
| Motorcycle registration (2 years) | $60 |
| Non-commercial trailer (2 years) | $30 |
| Specialty plate transfer / duplicate plate or tab | $5 |
| Duplicate paper registration | $2 |
You have 30 days after buying a vehicle to apply for a title in your name. The $10 in-person charge applies to renewals done at a DMV office that aren't part of a transfer. Renewals by mail, online or at a DMV business partner don't pay it.
Buying a used car with an expired registration
In Alaska, a sold vehicle's registration transfers to the new owner, even an expired one. If it's been expired for less than a full year, you pay the full biennial fee starting from the month it expired, even though you weren't the one who let it lapse. The registration starts over only if it's been expired more than a year, or if the previous owner had an exemption such as the senior, Z-tab, military or disability exemption. A standard plate stays with the car. A personalized plate goes with the seller, and you get a generic one.
Exemptions and permanent registration
- Permanent Z-tab: vehicles at least 8 years old in eligible areas, for an extra $25 plus the normal fees. It ends at a sale.
- Seniors 65+, mobility disability, disabled veterans (50% or more) and Gold Star families: one vehicle registered permanently with no registration fee or MVRT, only title and lien fees.
- Alaska National Guard: one vehicle for two years with no registration fee or MVRT.
- Nonresident active-duty military: no MVRT on any number of vehicles. The registration fee still applies.
- Farm vehicles: $68 registration with no MVRT.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew?
Within 3 months of the current expiration date. A registration can never be issued for more than 24 months.
Do I pay the MVRT again if I move within Alaska?
No. The tax isn't collected again when the vehicle changes residence or ownership during the registration period, unless the registration expires for another reason.
Is a leased car registered commercially?
Yes. Vehicles owned by a business or company, including leased vehicles, are registered commercially even if the lessee uses them personally. Commercial rates and MVRT are higher than the non-commercial figures here.
