How much is car registration in Washington State?
Washington car registration fees for a typical sedan start at about $82 a year: $30 license fee + $35 weight fee + $6 filing fee + $11 service fee. SUVs and pickups pay more weight fee, EVs add $150, and in the Sound Transit area the RTA tax can add hundreds more.
The state fees are modest and mostly flat, so the Washington State vehicle registration cost for a gas car outside the Sound Transit area stays under $150 a year. The cost to register a vehicle in Washington State gets higher in two cases. The two numbers that make Washington tabs expensive for some drivers are the weight fee, which rose in 2026, and the regional transit authority (RTA) excise tax charged to vehicles registered inside the Sound Transit district around Seattle, Tacoma and Everett.
Washington vehicle weight tax (the 2026 weight fee)
Every passenger car, SUV, motorcycle and light truck pays a motor vehicle weight fee based on its empty scale weight. The legislature raised it for registrations due on or after January 1, 2026:
| Scale weight | 2026 weight fee | From January 1, 2029 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 4,000 lbs | $35.00 | $35.00 |
| 4,001 – 6,000 lbs | $65.00 | $75.00 |
| 6,001 – 8,000 lbs | $82.50 | $90.00 |
| Over 8,000 lbs | $96.00 | $110.00 |
Weights between the steps are rounded up to the next step, and DOL uses the manufacturer's empty weight. Motor homes pay a separate $75 weight fee. Heavier trucks registered by declared gross weight pay a different license-fee-by-weight schedule instead of the $30 license fee.

The RTA (Sound Transit) excise tax
If you live inside the Sound Transit district, which covers urban parts of King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, your renewal includes a regional transit authority motor vehicle excise tax that helps fund light rail and buses. Unlike the flat state fees, it's based on the vehicle's value under a state depreciation schedule tied to the manufacturer's base price, so it's highest on new, expensive vehicles and falls each year as the vehicle ages. Because DOL calculates the value from your vehicle record, the calculator uses the RTA amount printed on your renewal notice rather than guessing it. Outside the district, it's $0.
Worked examples
Renewing a 3,500 lb sedan outside the Sound Transit area
- $30 license + $35 weight + $6 filing + $11 service
- Total: $82.00
Renewing a 4,800 lb electric SUV in Seattle with a $320 RTA tax
- $30 + $65 weight + $6 + $11 = $112
- EV fees: $100 + $50 = $150
- RTA from the notice: $320 → total $582.00 (plus any city fee)
Washington title transfer fees
When you buy a vehicle, you have 15 days to transfer the title into your name, or a late transfer penalty applies. The title transfer costs the $6.50 title filing fee and the $18 service fee, plus registration fees for the new owner and the use tax or sales tax due on the purchase. Since the title fees themselves are flat, the calculator above, with the tax calculator below, is all the Washington title transfer fee calculator you need. Frequently asked questions
Why did my Washington tabs go up in 2026?
The motor vehicle weight fee rose on January 1, 2026, from as little as $25 to $35–$96 depending on weight, and the filing and service fees were also raised.
What is the cost to register a car in Washington State for the first time?
The registration fees above plus the $6.50 title filing fee and $18 title service fee, a plate fee if you need new plates, and the sales or use tax on the vehicle if you haven't already paid it.
How do I find out if I'm in the Sound Transit district?
Your renewal notice will show an RTA tax line if you are. Sound Transit also has an address lookup on its website.
Do hybrids pay the EV fee in Washington?
The $100 and $50 fees apply to vehicles that can be recharged from an outside source and travel at least 30 miles on battery power alone, which includes many plug-in hybrids. Regular hybrids that can't be plugged in don't pay them.
