How much is Charleston County vehicle tax?
Charleston County vehicle tax = value × 6% × your district's millage ÷ 1,000. For a car valued at $20,000, that's about $256 on Capers and Dewees Islands, $316 in Mt. Pleasant, $361 in the City of Charleston and $385 in Lincolnville, before any credits.
Every vehicle in the county pays the countywide levy of 218.8 mills in 2026 (slightly less on Capers and Dewees Islands). On top of that, cities, towns, fire districts and public service districts add their own millage. That's why Charleston County car taxes can differ by more than $100 a year between two neighbors a few miles apart.

How Charleston County car taxes are calculated
- Value: the Auditor assigns the vehicle a value for the tax year from the state's vehicle value guide.
- Assessment: personal vehicles are assessed at 6% of that value.
- Millage: the assessed value × your district's combined millage ÷ 1,000.
- Credits: Charleston County applies a tax credit factor (0.0009 in 2026), and several municipalities have their own credit factors, which reduce bills where they apply.
Example: a $20,000 car in the City of North Charleston
- Assessed value: $20,000 × 6% = $1,200
- Millage: 218.8 countywide + 91.5 city = 310.3
- Tax: $1,200 × 310.3 ÷ 1,000 = $372.36 before credits

Lowering or correcting your bill
- Wrong tax district: if your notice puts the car in a district you don't live in, contact the Auditor. The difference between districts can exceed 100 mills.
- Sold or moved: tell the Auditor and turn in your plate if you've sold the car or moved out of the county, so you're billed only for the time you owned it here.
- Exemptions: certain disabled veterans and others qualify for vehicle tax exemptions, approved through the county and SCDOR.
