How Spartanburg vehicle tax is figured
Spartanburg vehicle tax = value × 6% × your district's total levy. A car valued at $24,000 in the City of Spartanburg (7SS Z) owes $698.11 for 2026. The same car outside town limits in district 1CBF owes $563.62.
South Carolina taxes personal vehicles as property every year, and pickups and motorcycles are included. The state's Department of Revenue sets the assessment ratio for personal vehicles at 6% and has vehicles valued from nationally recognized value guides. Year to year, the value can't be more than 95% of the previous year's value. The County Auditor then applies the levy, the combined rate of every taxing body where the car is kept.
- Value: $24,000
- Assessed value: $24,000 × 6% = $1,440
- Levy: 0.4848 for 7SS Z (the Auditor's sheet shows 48.48 on the county pages, or 0.4848 on the town pages; both mean 484.8 mills)
- Tax: $1,440 × 0.4848 = $698.11
The tax is paid in advance. SCDMV won't register or renew the vehicle until the county tax is paid, and new residents must take care of it before registering. New residents have 45 days to transfer their title and registration.
Reading your Spartanburg SC vehicle tax district code
The code starts with your school district number. The letters after it stand for the special districts, such as a fire district, that also levy tax at your address. A trailing letter after a space means the car is inside a town, and the town's levy is added on top. One district code, four different bills:
- 5DUF: outside town limits, 325.1 mills ($468.14 on a $24,000 car)
- 5DUF I: inside the Town of Wellford, 404.7 mills ($582.77)
- 5DUF D: inside the Town of Duncan, 412.7 mills ($594.29)
- 5DUF L: inside the City of Greer, 427.9 mills ($616.18)
Not sure of your code? It's on last year's tax notice. The Auditor's office also publishes a map of county tax districts.

High-mileage reductions for 2026
South Carolina requires vehicle value guides to adjust for high mileage, and the adjustment is available when you appeal. Spartanburg County's 2026 chart sets the mileage a vehicle must exceed to qualify, by model year:
| Model year | More than | Model year | More than |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 15,000 | 2018 | 130,000 |
| 2025 | 30,000 | 2017 | 145,000 |
| 2024 | 45,000 | 2016 | 160,000 |
| 2023 | 60,000 | 2015 | 175,000 |
| 2022 | 75,000 | 2014 | 190,000 |
| 2021 | 90,000 | 2013 | 190,000 |
| 2020 | 100,000 | 2012 | 190,000 |
| 2019 | 115,000 |
The chart applies only to tax notices for tax year 2026. If your vehicle qualifies, file the High Mileage Appeal Form with the Auditor before your due date. The form asks for the odometer reading. The size of the reduction isn't on the chart, so the calculator doesn't apply one. Enter the value from your adjusted notice instead.
The road maintenance fee
Spartanburg County has charged a road maintenance fee on vehicles since fiscal year 2005–06. The money pays for county road work: the county says it used to spend about $3 million of it a year on paving, preservation and reconstruction, and it also funds safety improvements, widenings, bridge replacements and drainage repairs. The county's road fee page doesn't state the amount, so copy it from your notice into the calculator.
Paying Spartanburg County auto tax the first time
Moving in or buying a car means a stop at the Auditor's office (366 N. Church Street) before SCDMV. Bring a copy of the current registration or title, your Spartanburg County physical and mailing address, and the current mileage. You can also send the request by mail, fax (864-596-3446) or email to countyauditor@spartanburgcounty.org. Once the tax is paid, take the receipt to SCDMV to register. If you bought from a dealer, you've also paid South Carolina's one-time infrastructure maintenance fee, 5% capped at $500. See the South Carolina vehicle tax calculator for that.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Spartanburg vehicle tax change from last year?
Two things move it: the vehicle's value (capped at 95% of last year's) and the levy. Most 2026 levies changed only slightly from 2025. Inside the City of Spartanburg, 7SS Z went from 483.8 mills to 484.8.
When is the next reappraisal?
The last countywide reappraisal took effect in 2023, so the next is due in 2028. Reappraisal is for real estate. In a reappraisal year, millage is rolled back for every taxing entity except bond millage, which changes vehicle bills too.
Who do I call about my bill?
The Spartanburg County Auditor's office at 864-596-2600, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Auditor handles values, districts and high-mileage appeals. The Treasurer collects payment.
